Organizations are increasingly committed to the pillars of sustainability: environmental protection, social development, and economic growth. The adoption and implementation of work methodologies are essential to contribute to sustainable development; such is the case with Green BPM.
BPM (Business Process Management) continues to advance and evolve due to the importance organizations place on managing business processes. Green BPM is an approach integrated into BPM that analyzes business processes from a sustainable perspective, considering environmental and social impact.
Through this approach, processes can be improved and managed more consciously and responsibly, taking into account specific aspects such as resource use and how they are produced.
Ing. Marisa Cancela, Services Coordinator at Sofis Solutions, explains in the following interview the key role of the Green BPM approach in business process management, how adopting this approach impacts each organizational area, and the value it adds to process execution improvement.
What is Green BPM’s contribution to business processes?
The main benefit of adopting BPM is improved productivity. Clear, well-defined processes significantly reduce downtime and the execution of inappropriate activities. By incorporating technology such as SofisBPM, continuous process improvement is ensured. Green BPM also adds a sustainability focus at every stage of the BPM methodology to address key environmental, economic, and social issues.
How can organizations identify that they have sustainable processes?
The definition of sustainable processes arises when the organization decides to follow the methodology proposed by Green BPM. During implementation and maintenance, a constant effort of monitoring and continuous improvement is carried out, aiming to identify aspects of the process that can be modified to reduce resource consumption, maximize waste utilization, and thus ensure sustainability in process execution.
Why is it important to incorporate sustainability objectives in process management?
When we think about the future of new generations and ensuring they have the necessary resources, it is our duty and responsibility to evaluate what we can do from our position to contribute to this goal. In a small, medium, or large organization, Green BPM allows focus in this direction while also providing significant benefits to the organization. Implementing BPM alone is no longer sufficient, as the world is undergoing a cultural shift where a sustainability perspective is essential.
How can organizations adopt and implement Green BPM?
The first and perhaps most difficult step is making the decision. Next, it is important to find an advisor, such as Sofis Solutions, who can provide support in managing and implementing the solution development process. During the planning stage, it will be crucial to have a team of experts within the organization involved in the project to collaborate on decision-making in subsequent stages and later continue with process maintenance and continuous improvement.
What impact does this approach have on the BPM lifecycle?
The most important impact is that at each stage (planning, modeling, simulation, execution, monitoring, and improvement) work is carried out through the lens of sustainability. In some cases, decisions based solely on productivity or economic factors are re-evaluated with a different perspective. Although the final decision rests with the organization, it is essential to carry out the evaluation with a commitment to seeking the best solution from a sustainability standpoint.
Why is it important for Sofis Solutions to work under this approach?
