Committed to sustainability in the 25th anniversary of the Global Compact

Montevideo, July 25, 2025.

The United Nations Global Compact is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. It calls on companies and organizations to align their operations and strategies with ten universal principles in four key areas: human rights, labor standards, the environment, and anti-corruption.

Created with the purpose of involving the private sector in major global challenges, the Compact promotes inclusive and sustainable globalization. Through its work, it offers an ethical and practical guide for companies to act responsibly.

In this context, in 2013 Sofis Solutions voluntarily joined the United Nations Global Compact as a signatory, committing to align its operations and strategies with more responsible business principles in support of universal sustainability values.

Sofis Solutions has also driven actions that contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These efforts reflect the company’s commitment to sustainable development and the strengthening of its corporate ethics and values, aiming to address the main social, economic, and environmental challenges with a vision for 2030.

“Participation in the United Nations Global Compact gave us a framework to address sustainability issues from the beginning, and through its tools such as training, accelerators, and events, we were able to quickly and effectively incorporate ESG aspects into the organization, as well as apply them throughout our value chain.” —stated Gustavo Cirigliano, director of Sofis Solutions.

Promoting sustainability as part of Sofis culture

Sofis Solutions promotes a culture of sustainability that integrates environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles at the core of its business. Through the #GreenSofis initiative, it promotes responsible practices such as efficient use of resources, digitizing processes to reduce paper consumption, and developing software solutions aligned with sustainability goals. It also promotes awareness campaigns on related topics and encourages participation spaces so its team maintains an active commitment, generating a positive impact on society and the environment.

Below are some of the initiatives promoted by Sofis.

  • Since 2013, Sofis Solutions has prepared and submitted 10 Communications on Progress (CoP), reporting its progress in implementing the Ten Principles of the Global Compact and reaffirming its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Support for the Global Compact’s Forward Faster initiative since September 2023, with a commitment to accelerate progress toward the SDGs in key areas such as gender equality, climate action, living wage, and responsible finance and investment.
  • Creation of the #GreenSofis initiative, which aims to define, implement, and evaluate sustainable practices across environmental, social, and governance (ESG) areas, both in internal processes and in the products the company offers. Its projects include: the #GreenSofis Methodology, #GreenPath, and the Sustainable Digital Transformation Days.
  • Organization of the Sustainable Digital Transformation Days, an annual space where employees delve into the sustainability strategy through the adoption and implementation of best practices in information technology.
  • Adoption of the Principles for Digital Development, which guide the creation, implementation, and use of technology solutions in an ethical, inclusive, sustainable, and human-centered way.
  • Adoption of an Anti-Bribery Policy, implementation of an Anti-Bribery Management System, and activation of a confidential whistleblowing channel.
  • Development of internal workshops on corporate ethics and anti-corruption.
  • Adoption of the Environmental Policy and implementation of an Environmental Management System.
  • Adoption of the Inclusion Policy, which promotes an equitable, diverse, and inclusive work environment within the organization, encouraging equal opportunities, non-discrimination, and participation for all people.
  • Endorsement of the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), promoted by UN Women and the Global Compact.
  • Development of workshops and training talks on how to understand and support the Sustainable Development Goals.

In this regard, the company has been recognized by various organizations for its commitment to sustainability. One of these recognitions came in 2022, when Gustavo Cirigliano, director of Sofis Solutions, was named SDG Pioneer for Decent Work, as part of an annual program by the United Nations Global Compact that honors business professionals who advocate and promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their daily work.

#GreenSofis — a success story highlighted by the UN Global Compact

The UN Global Compact highlights success stories that demonstrate how companies around the world are building their sustainability approaches, implementing the Ten Principles, and contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is the case of Sofis Solutions’ commitment to sustainable digital transformation.

The case shows how leadership, team involvement, and strategic alignment can drive sustainability innovation through technology. It highlights how the initiative evolved from internal actions to operational integration, improving transparency, inclusion, and energy efficiency across all its digital products.

By 2018, Sofis Solutions had already accumulated several years of commitment to sustainability, focused mainly on internal practices and actions aimed at its staff. However, the company recognized that its impact potential would be much greater if it integrated sustainability into its business model and client-facing technology solutions.

That same year marked a key change in Sofis Solutions’ sustainability strategy, shifting from an exclusive focus on internal initiatives to generating broader impact through its solutions and clients. This is how #GreenSofis emerged — a methodology that integrates sustainability criteria (environmental, social, and governance — ESG) into every stage of the software development process, helping companies create more sustainable, inclusive, and transparent technology products.

The methodology is structured in six steps: requirements analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance. In each stage, actions are incorporated that support three key values:

  • Energy efficiency: for example, writing optimized code to reduce energy consumption (known as algorithm optimization), using the GreenCoder tool to enhance performance, and choosing eco-friendly servers (GreenHosting) to run the software.
  • Inclusion: ensuring that the software is accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities, following inclusive design standards, considering digital literacy, and providing an easy-to-use experience for a diverse audience.
  • Transparency: developing systems that allow users and partners to monitor data usage, promoting open data, and incorporating safeguards to prevent corruption and unethical practices.

Each team involved in the project adapts its processes according to the phase in which it participates, to incorporate these principles and ensure their operational integration.

Leadership: a key element in implementation

The company’s directors actively led the initiative, designing a plan that allowed time during the workday for employees to develop and implement sustainable actions. In addition, internal training and awareness campaigns were conducted to strengthen ESG competencies across all teams.

Each year, the methodology is reviewed and updated based on feedback from external stakeholders, insights from Sustainable Digital Transformation (SDTD) discussions, evolving sustainability standards, and customer needs.

#GreenSofis was also presented to clients, business partners, and peers in the IT sector to gain feedback, support its adoption, and strengthen its credibility. This motivated the company to submit the initiative to national and international competitions, expanding its reach and value.
