The impact of AI on the 3rd Sustainable Digital Transformation Conference

Montevideo, November 18, 2024.

Sofis Solutions kicked off a new edition of the Sustainable Digital Transformation Conference, where, for the first time, external guests shared reflective talks on the topics of sustainability, technology, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Every year, Sofis Solutions holds the event “Sustainable Digital Transformation Conference”. Through this platform, speakers share practices, trends, and experiences related to sustainability and technology. This year’s central theme focused on the impact of Artificial Intelligence on sustainability.

On November 13, the first presentations of the event commenced, featuring external guest contributions for the first time, offering perspectives on sustainability from stakeholders involved in the company’s projects and trends related to AI.

The opening talk was delivered by Sofis Solutions’ directors, Gustavo Cirigliano and Santiago Atella. They presented the current status of the #GreenSofis initiative, the main objectives of the Sustainable Digital Transformation Conference, examples of social, environmental, and governance impact, and the achievements of the past year.

#GreenSofis comprises four projects: (a) the #GreenSofis methodology for the software development lifecycle, (b) GreenPath, a practice for incorporating sustainable activities into organizational operations, (c) the Sustainable Transformation Conference itself, and (d) innovation aimed at fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

AI’s Impact on Sustainability

The second presentation of the day was delivered by the first external guest, Felipe Filomeno, Executive Director of the United Nations Global Compact, Uruguay. He discussed the UN Global Compact’s conceptual framework, his organization’s work within the network, and collaboration with Sofis Solutions as a member in relation to the UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles and the SDGs. He also shared updates on the SDGs and their targets.

He went on to explain how Artificial Intelligence impacts sustainability, citing two examples: one, the report “Generative AI for Global Goals,” which guides business leaders on how to leverage generative AI to accelerate progress toward the SDGs by 2030; and two, the signing of the Global Digital Compact, which establishes an inclusive global framework for multi‑stakeholder collaboration to overcome digital, data, and innovation divides.

According to Filomeno, “AI has the power to drive and multiply sustainable development goals. Therefore, it's crucial to leverage it to advance these goals.”

Systems with High Social Impact

The presentation titled *Client Dialogue – How Have Our Systems Impacted Lives?* was led by Clémentine Bouchereau, Registration and Identity Management Officer at UNHCR Mexico. She spoke about the impact of the Refugee Information System (SIRE), a system developed by Sofis Solutions to support the commitment to leave no one behind—especially in protecting individuals seeking refugee status entering Mexico.

During her presentation, Bouchereau highlighted the collaborative effort among the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR), UNHCR, and Sofis Solutions. She also discussed outcomes achieved in case registration and management, system interoperability with institutional systems and the digital archive system, and the integration of new applications such as (a) appointment scheduling with pre-verified registration, (b) COMAR Digital, and (c) an interpretation and translation module. She concluded by sharing some of the experiences during the project’s execution.

“The collaborative support on this project was essential for developing a system that enabled full case management throughout the process by each area of work at COMAR,” noted Bouchereau.

AI at Sofis in Practice

To close the first day, Santiago Atella, Director of Sofis Solutions, and Dannier Galicia, Innovation Manager, presented the company’s internal efforts in integrating and implementing AI to support daily processes and activities.

The presentations continued on November 14, marking the close of the 3rd Edition of the Sustainable Digital Transformation Conference. During the final day, four presentations were given by team members and leadership shared the 2025 work plan related to #GreenSofis and next steps in that direction.
