The United Nations (UN) aims to maintain international peace and security, promote good relations among nations and equality of rights, cooperate internationally to solve economic, social, and humanitarian problems, and assist in pursuing common goals among countries.
This October 24 marks another year of United Nations Day, commemorating the entry into force of the United Nations Charter, which was launched in 1945 and serves as the foundation for the UN’s objectives.
Sofis Solutions has been working with the UN on different initiatives where technology plays a transversal role. Some of the projects, aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and improving the lives of Latin American populations, are as follows:
Forced migration affects more than 89 million people annually, according to the UNHCR Global Trends report.
In Mexico, for example, in the last two years the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR) recorded 248,528 people in this situation. Therefore, COMAR and UNHCR, with the technical support of Sofis Solutions, developed a system to register and process applications for refugee status recognition.
Systematizing these processes has improved system efficiency, expedited case and procedure management, and ensured real-time access to information.
Unemployment is closely linked to migration as well as socioeconomic challenges. Over the last 30 years, about 30% of Salvadorans have emigrated in search of better job opportunities. In this context, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare requested the development of SIMEL to disseminate labor market information and promote the development of family economies in El Salvador.
To this end, Sofis Solutions developed an interface that allows users to search and share labor market information for the country, contributing to the achievement of SDG 8, which focuses on decent work and inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
Within the framework of the project “Expanding social protection for youth in informal employment,” led by UNDP, ILO, and UN Women in Ecuador along with the Ministry of Labor, Sofis Solutions developed “My Future is Today,” a digital tool designed to boost the economic progress of young people.
The purpose of “My Future is Today” is to connect young people to the labor market while promoting formal employment, presenting opportunities, and ethically and securely collecting user data to make it available to external actors aiming to benefit youth.
The digital tool was launched to show job opportunities and share information with an emphasis on labor rights for young people aged 18 to 29.
After the pandemic, UNDP promoted the project “Contributions for socio-economic recovery from COVID-19, using a portfolio approach for the central region in Uruguay,” which supported the Río Negro Basin Program under the Directorate of Territorial Planning (DINOT).
At the core of this project, geographic information technologies were used to encourage citizen participation in territorial governance. Sofis Solutions provided consulting and developed a platform to digitally manage geographic information, issues, and potential solutions to community concerns.
HUM, the collaborative platform, allows monitoring and exchanging data on work, environment, and tourism, among other topics, as well as sharing information about local economies and their potential impact on water quality and biodiversity.
Accountability contributes to government transparency and strengthens democratic processes. In Honduras, the Unit for Financing, Transparency, and Oversight of Political Parties and Candidates (UFTF) sought support to create a digital tool to facilitate accountability, aligned with SDG 16, which aims to reduce corruption and promote responsible and transparent institutions.
In this context, Sofis Solutions participated in developing the “Rendición de Cuentas Honduras” platform, digitalizing and streamlining the recording of financial operations for the obligated entities.
The platform allows access to information on the origin, destination, oversight, and management of public and private resources of the obligated entities. Its goals include increasing transparency in campaign financing, facilitating income and expenditure declarations, and assisting UFTF in monitoring these activities.
It was developed with support from UNDP and financed by the UN Peacebuilding Fund and the Infosegura program, supported by the United States Agency for International Development.
Sofis Solutions’ mission is to improve people’s quality of life through the digital transformation of organizations and technological inclusion. Its projects align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the use of technology. Together with UN agencies, Sofis has strengthened initiatives aimed at improving development and addressing the needs of current generations, particularly those in vulnerable situations that the UN prioritizes.
