World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

Montevideo, May 17, 2021.

The use of ICTs and the internet has become an essential part of human life and contributes to digital development. The many tools and systems developed have facilitated communication, process/procedure management, entertainment, learning and knowledge, and even the way we work (Home Office) during a pandemic like COVID-19. As a result, the so-called digital divide has increased, making it difficult for less developed countries and rural areas to access and use ICTs.

Today marks the celebration of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, commonly known as the "Internet Day." This day has been observed since late 2006, following a decision by the Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and supported by the United Nations General Assembly, proclaimed in Resolution (A/RES/60/252). The goal is to raise awareness about the possibilities the internet and ICTs offer to societies and economies, as well as to promote the need to reduce the digital divide.

"The information society has emerged as one of the main lines of defense against COVID-19. There have been many successful experiences that highlight both the crucial importance of ICTs and the deep digital inequalities between countries and within each country," said Houlin Zhao, Secretary-General of the ITU.

In line with this topic, Sofis Solutions has developed systems and digital tools to improve people’s quality of life, as stated in its mission. Through its work, the company has helped facilitate processes and procedures that previously could only be done in person and are now available online from any device with an internet connection, 24/7.

Among them, the following stand out:

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are a fundamental foundation for addressing the challenges and goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The possibilities offered by ICTs are limitless—from artificial intelligence and vital human connectivity to improving and accelerating most processes that keep the world moving today.
