Montevideo, January 24, 2024
Promoting access to quality education contributes to the fulfillment of human rights.
This January 24 marks the International Day of Education, a date proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to highlight the role education plays at the social level and its importance for development.
In 2024, the theme is “Education for a Lasting Peace,” an objective and commitment set at the international level, amid times of uncertainty due to several armed conflicts occurring simultaneously in different parts of the world. UNESCO highlighted that having an active commitment to peace “is more urgent than ever,” and that education is fundamental in pursuit of that goal.
Access to education is a human right that, even today, many people do not enjoy. According to UNESCO data, there are currently 250 million children and young people who have not been enrolled in school, and around 763 million adults are illiterate. “Their right to education is being violated and it is unacceptable. It is time to transform education,” the organization stated.
Information and Education
Governments, organizations, and private sector companies can carry out various initiatives and projects that promote access to quality education, thus helping to protect this right. By contributing to the educational development of populations with transformative learning that incorporates diverse values and skills, these initiatives help promote peace worldwide.
Sofis Solutions has carried out several projects related to education, focusing – in its various modalities and initiatives – on information, the fundamental base of any educational system.
In Uruguay, contributing to Ceibal’s vision of promoting innovative and inclusive education that looks toward the future and leverages technological opportunities, Sofis has supported the maintenance of various web and mobile systems in projects such as Ceibalkids, Biblioteca Te Recomienda, Portal Ceibal, and Jóvenes a Programar, among others. Additionally, it has developed digital solutions such as the ANEP-Ceibal attendance control application, which allows teachers to track student attendance from a mobile device.
Furthermore, for the Administración Nacional de Educación Pública (ANEP), Sofis developed the Gurí Project, a digital solution that centralized Unified Information Records Management in one system. By improving the quality of student and teacher databases, significant advantages were achieved in generating statistical information and evaluating students, while reducing the time required for manual administrative tasks. This represented a technological advance for Uruguayan education and enabled better access to information, a starting point for making better decisions.
Additionally, the company has worked alongside the Central Board of Directors of ANEP (Codicen), supporting the development of the education system. In recent years, Sofis has provided services in a Staff Augmentation modality, allowing Codicen to accelerate development processes with the support of specialized technicians. One of the projects developed for this body was the Teacher Portfolio, which involved designing and implementing a system for entering data on teaching activities, including subject planning, activity reports, and grades, facilitating the review process for directors and inspectors.
